History of Hell

The History of Hell, MI

First settled in 1838 by George Reeves, Hell started out as a grist mill and general store on the banks of what is now Hell Creek. George's habit of paying local farmers with homemade whiskey made many wives to comment "He's gone to Hell again" when questioned about their husband's wherabouts during harvest time. This name stuck, and "Hell" became an official town in 1841; the rest is history. Come out and visit us, and the next time someone tells you to 'Go to Hell' you can tell them that you've already been there and had a HELL of a lot of FUN!
